TOO MANY MIRRORS
(12/5/07)

they
are everywhere
and avoiding them
is a tricky
affair

adjust
the hours
leaving early
staying late
letting others
come and go
in the daylight
darkness shrouding
my arrivals
and departures

run errands
at the endpoints
of open and close
allowing the majority
to traverse the fat
of the business day
while I sneak by
at the withering
extremes

at home
knocks
go unanswered
calls
are handled
by a machine
cards and letters
opened
dismissed
then disposed
bills paid
promptly
electronically
so as not to incur
human intervention

a haunting
gone unnoticed
skirting my kind
diminishing discomfort
by minimizing
contact

people
I revile

in them
all I can see
is me
