Dogs 2007

THE HOTEL EMPTY
(3/9/07)

I checked in
forever ago
wandering these
bare
hardwood floors
looking for a room
that may
or may not
exist

I see
no staff
no other guests
and no furniture
all the doors
are open
and in each room
music plays
but a different
song from each
creating a cacophony
of competing sound
flowing into
a common stream
of insanity
flowing
down
the
halls

I see
no lights
but a hazy
illumination
permeates the structure
seeming to come
from the walls
themselves
there are
no shadows
to give an observer
any hint of reference
leaving me
to float about
in an uneasy
glow

I drag myself
from story
to story
attempting to match
the hieroglyphics
on the my key tag
to the strange symbols
etched into each
unlatched door
but no matter
how many I see
no pattern is discerned
leaving me clueless
as to the direction
of my destination

I do not
remember
standing outside
of this building
and have no idea
how far I must travel
up though this maze
until I finally
run out of
floors
to follow

I have
a feeling
that my journey
has no conclusion
and that I will
never
find a place
of rest

I am exhausted
and would settle
for any shadow
in which to sleep
but am forced
to haunt
an eternal
daylight
no bed
in sight
forever hearing
my footsteps
echo these halls
mixed with the
madding melody
of my undoing
