Dogs 2007

THE HAPPY COUPLE
(1/16/07)

you see them
out in public
arm in arm
smiling
kissing
whispering to each other
giggling like children
it's embarrassing
really
for their friends
family
and any nearby
passersby
who get within range
of their apparent
matrimonial
bliss

the
perfect pair
arrive home
stroll up the walk
side by side
to the front door
possibly wave
to any visible
neighbors
before entering their
pastel painting
of a home
in the most
fashionable part
of the city

the smiles
disappear
as the door closes
and they proceed
to their personal
comfort zones
in the large
house
he to his den
and bedroom
she to the kitchen
dining room
and her bedroom

they fix
their own meals
wash
their own clothes
watch
their own TVs
and generally lead
separate lives
under the
same roof
facial expressions
and written words
serve as questions
in their infrequent
interior encounters
with head shakes
nods
or monosyllabic
responses
as answers

they haven't
touched
except for show
in years

out in the world
in the restaurants
malls
or coffee shops
at the movies
art shows
or special events
they are one
not a photon
of daylight
could pass
between them

everyone else
shakes their head
and wonders why
there are
no
happy
children
