MIDWEEK INDEDPENDENCE
(7/4/07)

4th
of July
Wednesday
just doesn't
seem right
somehow

nobody
quite knows
what to do
with that
one day gap
right there
in the middle
of the week

fresh
from a long
Memorial Day weekend
they have visions
of a mini
vacation
but instead
look at the calender
and realize
that it's only
half
of a weekend
instead

Tuesday night
turns into
a fake Friday
and the party crowds
are out en masse
trying to sadly cram
all the life possible
into this small slice
of respite
wedging
three days
of alcohol consumption
into one
frenzied
faux Mardi Gras
weaving
through traffic
in high speed
desperate pursuit
of that great
American
payoff

time
away
from it all

they awake
on Independence Day
feeling anything but
hangovers
yard work
familial requirements
taxing their sensibilities
as bad
as any British
diminishing empire
nothing left
to do
but
staple
on a smile
read the script
and celebrate
the occasion
as expected
hoping to survive
with some semblance
of slipping sanity
before the
fireworks
signal an end
to a less
than holy
holiday

Thursday
other works
await
a second Monday
in a fractured week
laughing at
our ridiculous dreams
of relaxation
and escape

but
the next day
is a bona fide Friday
and the boss can again
temporarily
kiss our ass
as we flip
the calendar ahead
to anticipate
the Labor Day
extended
weekend

seeing
the time off
not realizing
the irony
of it all

Memorial
Independence
Labor

heavy themes
lost in the
lightweight
definition
of an American
summer
