Dogs 2007

MIDDLE GROUND
(7/21/07)

in between
the darkness
and the pain
needles
caress our spines
with alarming
regularity

in between
the darkness
and the pain
radios play
each song backwards
staccato lyrics
reminding us
of yesterday

in between
the darkness
and the pain
all lost dogs
return home
on a Wednesday
afternoon
to find their masters
gone astray

lovers embrace
in desperation
crumbling the sand
of the diminishing
recipients
of their affections

pieces of glass
from ancient accidents
work their way
back
to the surface
creating
fresh wounds

joyful colors
are painted
over decaying walls
which finally crumble
when our friends
come over
for tea

we lock ourselves
out of vehicles
traveling
to exotic
destinations
embarrassed
by their empty
interiors

rivers
carry debris
of sympathy
and secrets
loosened by storms
that rage
in the mountains
or our moral
decline

heavy sweat
flows
into browless eyes
irritating
our infinite
aspect ratio

hearts beat
against collapsing chests
weakened by
bludgeons
of emotional
uncertainties

neighbors
toss carcasses
of dusty dreams
over the fence
into our yard
of sorrow

children point
at the elderly
tracing the lines
of decrepitude
that define
their futures

in between
the darkness
and the pain

we live

we die

finally
crossing
the human limit
of comprehension
to float away
in the void
of our
disbelief
