Dogs 2007

INTERVIEW MACHINE
(2/9/07)

we've
done it
so often
and for
so
damn
long
that the routine
has been honed
and perfected
to a finely tuned
instrument

first
I tell them
what we do
and how
we do it
show them
the product
explain
the possibilities
and hint at any
of the many
various roles
and opportunities
open to them
in our small
organization

then
the boss
takes over
and asks
all the personal
questions
that no one
is supposed to ask
anymore
but does it
in such an offhand
manner
that nobody
so far
has complained

he and I
will get together
after they have left
and discuss
our impressions
and evaluate
the prospect
then decide
if we will
offer them
a position

we've had
much too much
opportunity
to practice
our act

good people
are hard to find
and even harder
to keep
once
we find them

we're so
damn good
at the hiring
process
that we're here
early each morning
late each night
as well as
every weekend
as those
who work for us
barely make 40
at their desks

we wonder
sometimes
how in the Hell
we got
our jobs

we look
across
at each other
because there is
no one else
to blame
