DISTURBING THE SILENCE
(8/25/07)

we are assailed
every day
in
every way
with useless
juiceless
words

the same things said
again
and again
until you just
want to put up your hand
and stop it
before
it begins

we could say more
with nods
shakes
pointing
moans and groans
than most language
could ever
convey

written words
seem even worse
since malice
and aforethought
are needed to commit
such crimes
to paper
and screen

someone
actually considered
that the same old words
connected together
in sometimes different
combinations
fornications
concubinations
would impress upon
a reading recipient
a meaning
and emotion
hitherto
experienced
by humankind

at best
they attain
cute
clever
contrived stretches
of obvious
or nonsensical
alliteration
and rhyme

I tire especially
of my own
unoriginal efforts
to the point
where I want
to tape my mouth shut
and glue
my fingers
together

the words
weary me
and I wish
that I could
simply
stop
shut up
and deliterate
my existence
