DILAPIDATED SANCTUARY
(1/23/07)

I live
in an old house
built in 1939
which
if not old
is at least
older
than I

it is in
fairly good shape
much work invested
over the years
to keep it livable
and comfortable

even I
have contributed
somewhat with
a remodeled utility room
new storm windows
and a new roof

but
the original bathroom
remains mostly unchanged
chipped cabinets
a stained tub
and discolored tile
detract from the addition
of fresh paint
new towel rods
and door
handles

a recently removed
shower enclosure
has exposed many
archeological layers
of decorating endeavors
revealing strips
of flowered wallpaper
at the lowermost level
dating surely
to the middle
of the last
century

this room
was to be the first
to be updated
after my purchase
but still
remains
falling apart
at the grout
hinting at
the true age
of the structure

it reminds me
of all those bathrooms
in all those cheap hotels
run-down apartments
and hidden garage
add-ons
to which
I was relegated
for my survival
through all those years
of miscreant meandering
looking for some answers
to my own existence
and wondering
at the purpose
of all this earthly
melodrama

I like it
now

the bathroom
not
the melodrama

I sit
on the toilet
doing my business
feeling the warped
and cracked floor tile
beneath my feet
discovering
the dark areas
of topical geography
worn through the sea
of aged white finish
on the tub
and I seem
that
much
closer
to my past

and
no doubt
that
much
closer
to my future
