BRIDGES BARELY BURNING
(2/27/07)

we gain
so many attachments
throughout our lives
financial
spiritual
familial
marital
spatial
sexual
social
legal
until we are bound
as a mummy
in a cocoon
of comforting
illusions

the ones
once beneficial
the ones most difficult
to sever forever
once their usefulness
has passed
cloying thoughts
of renaissance
spread their lies
over our wants
and needs
painting our realities
with a soft patina
of hopeful desire
and self
delusion

we come
to a point
of realization
that our minor fantasies
have no thriving lives
of their own
they are
mere puppets
given movement
by shadowed strings
of consciousness
in a blinded theater
of wishful thinking

the time
thankfully comes
to cut the ties
and cast the illusions
onto a forgetting sea
that carries away
our denuded dreams
to a certain horizon
of death

age
by then
has weakened
those tenuous spans
of lackadaisical linkage
and no
massive conflagration
of dramatic separation
is required
since the structure
by now
is no more substantial
than a desiccated
cobweb
stretched
to its limit

all
that is needed
to say goodbye
is a gentle breath
to blow asunder
those lingering
bindings

a
simple kiss
to finally finish
that diminished
torment
no longer
capable
of creating
a tear
