Dogs 2006

'TIS THE SEASON
(11/29/06)

we grow up
seeing and hearing
words and phrases
that we accept so easily
due to common usage
but on closer inspection
they can seem
extremely odd

Christmas
is laden
with them

noel
elves
sleigh
eggnog
reindeer
Santa Claus
Kriss Kringle

admit it

look at them
or say them enough
and they become
quite absurd

and that's not
considering
the more severe
religious terms
that we could throw
into the mix

yuletide
has always
given me problems
it's really
a strange one
go ahead
try it

yuletide
yuletide
yuletide

no doubt about it
it's a weird fucker
the more I read
the more I pronounce
the more alien
it seems on the page
or stumbling
past my lips

the nearest dictionary
lists yule
as the "name
of a heathen festival
at the winter solstice"

heathen
heathen
heathen

"a person
regarded as irreligious
uncivilized
unenlightened
etc.

festival
festival
festival

"a time
of celebration
marked by special
observances"

thankfully
tide is simply
"a space
in time"
but considering the above
a bit redundant

hmmm...

so
we have a time
for a bunch of dolts
to party
in the dark
and cold

sums it up
quite nicely

yuletide
you bet
your ass
