MINIMAL DARKNESS
(9/23/06)

the
cosmologists
astrophysicists
and assorted experts
today tell us
that dark matter
is the mother
and preserver
of all things visible
and worshipped

an
unseen parent
that will eventually
receive us all
into the night
at the end
of time

we live
on a vast ocean
of darkness
with a few bread crumbs
of light
sprinkled
on its surface
which we have chosen
until now
to call
reality

humankind
has always sensed
this blackened bedrock
in the dim recesses
of our collective consciousness
and throughout the millennia
we have sought ways
to express this darkness
but in our fear
and ignorance
we still clung
to the deceptive
security of the light
declaring all
in the shadows
as obscene
and evil

then
we have those
giggly groups of dilettantes
with fanciful posters
gothicized garb
incantations
and lightweight
reservoirs of rhyme
who treat the darkness
as a precious trinket
to be playfully taken
out after sunset
rolled around
and held up to the eye
to admire its
smoothness

the darkness
envelops
their existence
yet they only see
the momentary absence
of light
as venerable
and not
the true nature
of the source

look
at your hand
a tree
a stone
a baby's face
look into
your lover's eyes
and see the darkness
that supports every
tenuous structure
which we define
as real
and good

see
the darkness
in every breath
every motion
every stillness
about you
for the dark
is most visible
in the serene simplicity
surrounding us
and
not in some
predictable
overproduced horror show
of human endeavor
filled with pathetic
witches
goblins
and ghouls

look
into the fire
and know
that the darkness
lies within
and even though
we are not yet able
to see it there
be assured
that it laughs
at the flickering flame
as space laughs
at the yellow sun
barely noticeable
in the infinite
black
expanse

in death
we are finally
and absolutely
reclaimed by the darkness
and cease to exist
as aberrations
of light

we
are taken
to a place
beyond all depths
and despair
where the Hell
of our limited understanding
will be
but a momentary murmur
in the endless ebony
above us
