LONE TREE HILL
(12/22/06)

people
passed by
on the highway
every day
as it stood alone
a hundred yards away
on a rolling rise
in the barren
south plains

an anomaly
on this arboreally limited
stretch of flatlands
its nearest cousins
grew miles away
domesticated
in town

but this rarity
was seldom noticed
motorists caught up
in the madness
of the everyday
rush to live
and blind
to the unique nature
presented to them

possibly
a child
occasionally stares
out of a side window
and wonders
why

this winter
however
was different
from those previous decades
of seasonal cycles
for in the fall
the leaves dropped
for the last time
and the tree
quietly died
in the diminishing
daylight

it would
be months
before this
black and white
November negative
would be exposed
by background green
to gradually reveal
a fully developed
death

but until spring
the cars
would continue
to drive by
this solitary sight
the occupants
busily ignorant
of its muted
demise

"Daddy
why is that tree
all by itself?"

"I don't know
son

someone
must've planted it
a long
time
ago

it doesn't
belong
there"
