the people
all pointed
and laughed
as I walked
trying my best
to be inconspicuous

my flaws
were evident
for all to see
as if I were wearing
a neon hat
my deficiencies

the cool fall breeze
would normally chill
my mortified skin
but a generator
of embarrassment
warmed me
to the point
of sweating

I turned the corner
leaving the boulevard
for the sanctuary
of the side streets
which would lead me
to my home

a child
approached me
on the sidewalk
as a flock
of fallen leaves
gusted up the lane
in our direction

the leaves arrived
before the boy
and he pointed
and smiled at them
as they passed
straight through me
