CHRISTMAS PARTY
(12/27/06)

they entered
the door
and he shook hands
squeezed arms
and
smiled
smiled
smiled
until he thought that
his teeth would break
from the pressure
of stretched lips
grinning thin
uttering the most
inane cliches
and banalities
of introduction
and greeting

he was there
at the wish
of another
a trade-off
of sorts
that had
a most immediate
and severe
downside

days later
safely hidden
from the holiday
he would appreciate
the moment better
but for time being
his soul
and psyche
suffered

they separated
and he worked his way
to the back of the room
and the wet bar

he had chosen
a bad decade
in which
to get sober

the lone inhabitant
on the receiving side
of the setup
had his back
to the room
hunched over
his tall drink

the man turned
upon hearing the order
for tonic water
sneered a bit
and returned
to his object
of focus

all pretenses
dropped
they were going
to get along
just fine

a calm
in this seasonal storm
of insincerity
