Dogs 2006

BEWARE THE LONELY
(12/3/06)

they knock on doors
they telephone
they send
long
rambling
letters and emails
they are pathetic
although to some
they seem sad
and worthy
of attention

they are the lonely

go ahead
invite them over
make contact
and learn
that not only
do they crave companionship
but they also demand
to be entertained
as well

they are the bored

we try
we really do
to be compassionate
and console these
needy souls
but they always
require
more

they don't seem
to understand
that their only answer
is to be alone
in order to find
themselves
God
insanity
or possibly some
bizarre combination
of the three

no one
can make that trip
by their side

no one
can help them
unless they first
begin to help
themselves

but no
they sit
in our homes
chattering away
oblivious to the fact
that the clock nears
midnight
and that we have
jobs
families
and problems
of our own
but
their desperation
only increases
as their departure
becomes eminent

we hug them
we shake their
sweaty palms
and wave
as they walk away
but you know
that they'll
soon return

unless
some satori
is attained

or possibly
a car wreck
heart attack
or suicide
relieves us all
of their fears

but for now
the phone
still
rings
incessantly
