Dogs 2005

AN AFTERNOON WALK
(8/27/05)

late
in the day
I was walking
the streets
of the neighborhood
and wearily attempting
to stretch my legs
and unravel my
tightly wound
mind

a car
rolls slowly past
the fat white flabby arm
of America
hanging out
of the window
crooked
with cell phone in hand
chatting as aimlessly
as she's controlling
her vehicle

I quickly hop
up on the curb
to avoid possible injury
wondering why the woman
doesn't collide with
a less mobile
target
and wondering
why her phone is not lost
amongst her
many chins

yes
I am disgusted
but the thought passes
as quickly as the car
rounds a corner
no subsequent crashes
thankfully heard
in the afternoon
air

I am sure
that I look
equally as alien
to that car-bound creature
maybe her bile rising
as she spots me
distractedly
while lost
so deeply
in conversation

"Helen
you wouldn't believe
this skinny freak
I'm seeing...
He must have
the AIDS or
something"

humanity
you gotta
love it
